Meet Sophie
Sophie is a trained therapy dog that enjoys belly rubs, playing fetch, riding in the car, and being the center of attention! Sophie was trained as a therapy dog through Lutheran Hospital's Pet Therapy program in 2023 and has experience interacting with older adults, including those living with dementia, as well as visiting intensive care units, trauma units, and surgical units. Her calm demeanor facilitates calming the central nervous system and creating moments of joy for everyone she interacts with. Sophie would love to be a part of meaningful interactions with your loved one who is living with dementia.
Dogs and Dementia
Scientific studies show that there is a meaningful interaction between adults living with dementia and a therapy pet. The benefits of these interactions support adults living with dementia in achieving a sense of purpose, as well as providing psychological and emotional, physical, and social benefits.

Psychological and Emotional
Research suggests that interactions with therapy pets can facilitate reducing stress levels, feelings of anxiety, and feelings of depression. Therapy pets have the unique ability to create a sense of stability and safety.

Physical Benefits
Studies have shown that interacting and petting a therapy pet can have physiological benefits, including reducing blood pressure, increasing oxygen saturation, and increasing emotional well-being.

Social Benefits
Research suggests that interactions with a therapy pet can support social interaction and communication skills. The therapy pet creates an opportunity for a non-judgmental setting to interact in a low-stress environment.
